Our school made just over $1,000!!!!!! Yes, that's a lot of money!!!!

Thank you teachers who stepped in and filled volunteer spots. Thank you shoppers. Thank you Mrs Hancey for coming out and supporting & being willing to step in. Thank you Laralee Davenport for staying nearly the entire day. Thank you Mrs Boyle & the Cougar Choir. And thank you all our volunteers for coming out & helping at shifts throughout the day. It worked out great!

Baseball Skills in P.E.

Mr. Bonner (the new PE teacher) has invited students to bring their baseball mitts on Tuesdays as they work on baseball skills during PE over the next several weeks. Please make sure the mitt is marked with your name.

Please also remind your children that PE is a class and not recess time. This has been a problem the last few months that the school has been trying to address.

We had a huge success with the Fall Book Fair. Many, many thanks to our Book Fair patrons, volunteers, and especially the PTA Board Members--Tamara Moss, Shelly Rose, and Erin Hamblin--who worked many, many hours to pull off this major fundraiser for our school.

So where did that earned income go?

$100 in new books for the school library--books selected by Mrs. Roberts.
1 more Smart Board for the school--Hurray!
Technology supplies and equipment to go with the Smart Board.

Thank you again. Hopefully your child is enjoying the books you purchased. And we hope you see the value you've added to the school!

Remember to send students wearing their school shirts on Friday! The class with the highest percentage gets the travelling Cougar Trophy & their class' picture posted on the Cougar Pride Board. (Bulletin Board located on the way to Computer Lab.) Also, on random Fridays students may receive an extra incentive.

Collecting Phone Books to Recycle & Earn $$

The school is collecting any and all phone books to recycle. Our school will earn money for simply collecting them but the school that collects the most will earn bonus money! Have your child deliver the phone book(s) to Mrs. Hancey's office. Let's see if we can bury her!

You may also remind your child that P.E. is not recess--its a class. They have has some trouble with this lately. So you might check in with your child and see how they are liking P.E. these days and remind them that the P.E. coach is a teacher--not a recess aid. :)

Collecting Box Tops

Student Council is trying to encourage students to bring in the Box Tops that hopefully have been accumulating at home. New Lost & Found

The Lost and Found has been relocated. The school has purchased this new rack and hangers so that hopefully students can more easily locate items they are looking for.

Beginning a Student Book Club

Mr. Trimble has agreed to begin to supervise a Student's Book Club. They'll meet Wednesdays immediately after school. The books will be more appropriate for the older grades. They are considering "The Candy Shop War", "Beyonders", and "Janitors" each by Brandon Mull. Students will need to bring a copy of the book--either bought or borrowed. Kite Festival is Coming

Reading charts for the Kite Festival came home today. Check your child's backpack. Record daily & your child will recieve a free book or kite at the Kite Festival on April 21st.

We had our Reading Celebration Assembly today with Max the Magician. Those invited had read, filled out, and turned in their KUED Reading Logs back in November.

Each child recieved a book, a sticker, popcorn and they were invited to the special assembly. There was also a drawing for all sorts of prizes--magic books, book lights, DVDs, and pizza coupons to Little Cesears.

During the Winter Break, Santa Clara City modified the crosswalk & corner on the north side of the school. The new corner cut outs make it easier for children with scooters or bikes and parents with strollers to cross more easily. Our crossing guard said she was so excited she said "I felt like it was Christmas again." Special thank to Santa Clara City Council Members Matt Ence & Bill Jacobsen for making this happen.

Ideas for the Holiday Break

We get a little extra time off with the kids this year. Are you wondering what to do with the kids? Maybe pick one activity a day or each child picks one you will do during the break. Here are some ideas to get you brainstorming. Special thanks to our wonderful teachers who suggested many of these.......

Make a bear's hibernation cave with a quilt over the kitchen table (sent them in the cave with
      flashlights and favorite books)
Turn the captions "on" while kids are watching a holiday movie--it'll be an opportunity to read along
Have younger kids point out the similarities and difference in packages under the tree
Teach an older child to cook their favorite recipe
Let younger kids play on www.starfall.com
Make birdfeeders our of pinecones and peanut butter (google online instructions)
Have younger kids pick out the wrapping paper pattern ("tree, tree, snowflake, tree, tree...")
Pick a book that's been made into a movie--read the book over the course of a few days then watch
     the movie (Charlotte's Web, Polar Express, Swiss Family Robinson, Pollyanna, Harry Potter,
     Nim's Island, Grinch Who Stole Christmas, etc.)
Get a Lego book from the library to inspire kids to make new creations
Have the kids make a restaurant for dinner--including setting up a fancy table and drawing menus
Read a Beehive Nominee book
Let kids make collages out of used wrapping paper and Christmas greeting cards
Work on a Girl Scout or Cub Scout requirement
Memorize a poem together
Have the kids write a script and make a movie of a favorite scene from a book
Make igloos out of sugar cubes and read "Look Inside an Igloo" or another book about Inuit or
     Eskimo People
Work on learning to tie shoes--you could even use leftover ribbon from wrapped gifts
Visit the library
Have the kids write new words to a Christmas song or a new verse

5th Graders can work on a Book Project

Lost & Found Box

Breakfast with Santa is Coming!

Save the date! Our Breakfast with Santa will be Saturday, December 3rd 8 a.m. til 11 a.m. Cost is $3 per person or $15 per family. Teachers will be reading one of their favorite holiday stories & the 2nd Graders will be singing some holiday favorites. To simplify the format we are inviting you to bring your digital camera to take pictures with the jolly old elf. Hope you will join us!

Mountain Man Rendezvous (4th Grade)

Check out the fun the 4th graders had at the Mountain Man Rendezvous today! Great way to get a better sense of Utah History. Special thanks to all the efforts of our teachers, room moms, and many volunteers who purchased supplies, coordinating experts & volunteers, helped kids sew purse pouches, organized games, cooked scones, and many other behind the scenes activities. Reading Marathon is ON!

Our Reading Marathon began on Monday, November 14th but its not too late to catch up! Children who reach the goal by December 9th will attend a special party with a magician & prizes.

What is Red Ribbon Week?

Red Ribbon week to focus on teaching & celebrating safe choices--particularly anti-drugs, anti-alcohol, anti-bullying, and anti-violence.

You can refer to the red paper kids bring home about specific things each day of the week. We encourage you to continue the discussion at home with your family's views and values on these subjects.

Note that students are encouraged to wear their pledge ribbon each day at school. Most teachers will have students keep the ribbon at school so this will be easier. But if your student does show up at home with it during the week, please encourage them to wear it the next day. Each teacher has a prize for one student in their classroom who wears their ribbon. One prize will be awarded each day.

Friday there will be a special assembly and a sweet treat. The assembly will focus on non-violence and will be age appropriate.

Special thanks to Patricia Utley and many special teachers at the school for working hard to pull activities, prizes, and the assembly together for our students. We are lucky to work together well to provide great activities for our students.

New Playgroup Map looks GREAT!

Stock up on Cereal!

Throughout October the Bloomington Wal-Mart is tripling Box Top values of ANY Box Tops items purchased at their store--any customer, any box top product. Any box top item that is scanned for purchase in October at the Bloomington Wal-Mart will go to our school. (Note the cute signs at each check out with Mrs Hancey & Mr. Trimble.) Most of that money raised will go toward our "Shade Our Children" fund.

So please consider stocking up on cereal and other box top products:

Reflections is Coming.....

PTA sponsers our annual Reflections contest. We try to balance by offering Reflections as a competitive art contest in the Fall and Evening of the Arts as a celebration of the arts in the Spring. We encourage all children to participate in both. All children who participate in Reflections this year will be invited to an ice cream party during school on Thursday, October 27th from 2:30-3:30. (We still need some help serving at this ice cream party--if you are available please contact Melissa Ord at 628-7214.)

The Reflections theme this year is "Diversity Means....." All children should have brought home a yellow packet with details on the categories and the rules. If yours has been misplaced you can contact our Reflections Board Member Melissa Ord at 628-7214.

Some ideas to get your children motivated & inspired:

Show them last year's national winners (click here) for inspiration

Buy them a new notebook or art supply (you'd be surprised how exciting a new 75 cents box of crayons can be)

Set apart time for them to work on it

Take them on a walk with a camera & let them take as many photos as they'd like

Read short stories by children authors (click here for some)

Empty out your craft drawer and spread it on the table & let them at it

Have a playdate & let them make videos together

Take them to a museum (Sears Art Gallery on Dixie Campus is free)

Spread out old magazines, scissors, and glue and let them create a collage

Take them to the store to let them pick a new art supply

Get your Lins receipts turned in! The deadline is approaching. All receipts dated August 15th through October 22nd need to be turned in soon. Don't forget to write one of your student's names & their teacher's name on the back of the reciept.

Wear Your School Shirts Friday!

Remember each Friday is "Spirit Day" and all students are encouraged to wear their school shirts. The class with the most students participating (percentage of the class not the number of students) will receive the Cougar (see photo) to display in their classroom (plus bragging rights.) K-2 compete against each other and 3-5 compete against each other.

Older versions of the Santa Clara Elementary t-shirt (navy blue or red) will be counted. Snow Canyon shirts, BYU Cougar shirts, etc will not count (shirts need to say "Santa Clara Elementary".) If a grade or class is having a special actitivy--Pajama Day or Rodeo Roundup--dressing up for the event is counted.

Each student recieved a free shirt during the 2010-11 school year. Newly enrolled students and kindergarteners reveived one this year. If your child has outgrown their shirt, new shirts are available at the office for $5. Special thanks to our t-shirt sponsers on the back of the shirts!

Walk to School Day

Thanks to Mrs. Roberts for all the organization she put into Walk to School Day. It was fun (and thankfully the rain held off!) Thank you for all those who helped with Safety Week--there was a lot of work & effort and it paid off. Hopefully your children shared with you the things they discussed & the assemblies they had this week. Please continue these discussions at home. Safety discussions included bike safety, pedestrian safety, a fire drill Friday, internet safety, buckling up in vehicles, and more. Ask your student! Let's keep these kids safe!

A special thank you to those helping with Safety Week. Today there was a special assembly for students which focused on Internet Safety. Please ask your child about it and reinforce the principles at home. One simple tip sheet for internet safety is found here on the PTA website. Safety Week will continue through Friday--take advantage and talk to your children!

Collecting Pull Tabs

We continue this year collecting pull tops from cans--soda cans, fruit cans, soup cans, etc. Collecting these tabs are to benefit the Ronald McDonald Houses in Salt Lake City. However the schools which collect the most each year are also given a special assembly--which we won in 2009. Assemblies are always loved by students but typically cost the school or PTA about $200. So collecting pull tops is a win-win situation. One idea is to keep a sandwich baggie taped to the inside of a cupboard and simply drop them in. Students can drop them in the pictured container near the office. Ask grandparents & neighbors to collect for us too!

Recycling Bin Santa Clara Parking Lot

The pictured recycling bin in our school parking lot says "Newspapers Only" but that is incorrect. You can recycle any type of paper or cardboard in this bin. Although in the past the school received free recycled card stock in exchange for the recycled materials in this bin; that is no longer the case. The bin is placed here for convenience for the school and community. So if you are looking to recycle paper & cardboard in a way to help out community causes you can use the bins at the Santa Clara Park on Canyon View or at Gubler Park next to Lava Ridge Intermediate--one supports Swiss Days & the other goes towards building a Vetran's Memorial. You are also welcome to continue to drop off paper & cardboard here at the school bin.

Shoes Shoes Shoes!

PTA encourages parents to support the school rules--including the dress code. Just a reminder that the dress code regarding shoes states students should wear "suitable footwear" and "flip-flops and slides (ballet style or croc style shoes) are not approriate for PE classes." Please remember PE classes are on Tuesday and the Gold Metal Walk is on Fridays.

A couple weeks ago students found a scorpion on the playground. The same week a large pile of doggy poop was found in the middle of the playing field. Students line up for everything and walking into one another is not uncommon. Covered feet prevent many scrapes and other boo boos. Wearing appropriate shoes protect children.

Please support the school rules by sending children to school with appropriate footwear. The entire dress code can be found in your students blue & white folder or at this link.

Why do we Log Volunteer Hours?

Have you wondered why you need to sign in at the office when you come to volunteer? Yes, it helps the office to provide better security to know who is coming and going. But another reason is to track PTA volunteer hours.

Because PTA is a non-profit organization they must show proof of non-profit status. Part of that is the volunteer hours that our PTA performs. Volunteer Coordintor Lara Lewis collects the hours and records them regularly. These hours are reported quarterly to our PTA District which in turn passes them on to Utah PTA.

Hours can be recorded for actually going into the classroom, cutting things out for teachers, helping at PTA events such as the Book Fair, helping at school events like Field Day, or even for babysitting for a friend so they can volunteer. Once a month Lara also selects a "Volunteer of the Month" with a donated prize from a local store.

Please remember to sign in at the front office when you come to volunteer. Other volunteer hours can also be recorded on this same form.

Thank you Lara for keeping tabs on our volunteers. And thank YOU for all your time and effort in behalf of our school!

Box Tops Money Will Replace the School Signs!

PTA for many years has given the Box Tops to the Student Council to fund their activities and interests for the school. Through the Box Tops they have collected enough money to replace the aging signs out in front of the school. The student council has also generously donated a portion of their money to the Shade Our Children Campaign for the playground covers.

If anyone knows of an Eagle Scout looking for a project we'd welcome the help to organize the replacement of these signs. (Other potential Eagle Scouts could also work to repaint the faded playground state & country maps.) Contact Mrs. Hancey or Mrs. Simpkins for more information.

Special thanks this year to PTA Board Member Janene Gough who will be helping the students handle the processing of the Box Tops this year.

You Can Still Join PTA!

We're still looking to add more PTA members. You do not have to serve on the PTA Board (though you are welcome--we still have vacancies!) You do not have to volunteer at the school.

Joining PTA helps you get more connected to the school, helps raise awareness of activities, and helps you tap into a network of neighbors, teachers, and friends working to support our children and our school.

Membership is $10. Checks should be made out to "Santa Clara PTA." You can drop it at the school office anytime 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

How do Lins Receipts Help Our School?

Lin's receipts are our 2nd biggest source of income for

Santa Clara Elementary PTA--approximately $1,000 was

collected last year. (Yes, that's more than twice what we

earned on any of our labor-intensive fund-raisers!)

Any time you shop at Lin's save the receipt. Write your student's name and teacher on the back to be entered in a weekly drawing (Lin's even provides these rewards!) Drop the receipt(s) in the clear box located just down from the office at the main crossroad in the school. Students can drop them in before or after school. You can also collect receipts from grandparents, neighbors, etc.

Receipts must be turned in quarterly so please turn them in regularly. They are currently collecting receipts dated after the first day of school August 15th.) Special thanks to your Lin's Receipts coordinators Ashley Southam and Edith Varney (yes, grandparents are welcome to serve on the PTA board!)

What is a Gold Metal School?

Have you wondered what this sign meant? A "Gold Metal School" is a school that is committed to created a healthy environment for its students. Since 2006 Santa Clara Elementary has participated in this program operated through the Utah Department of Health.

Participation means teachers, students, and staff participate in a 1 mile walk each Friday. (Maybe you've seen them?) Faculty also commits to avoid sugar treats as rewards and implementing healthy education into their ciriculum. For more details click here.

Studies show that students who exercise are more focused & perform betters on tests. One in four students in Utah are overweight or at risk for becoming overweight. Healthy habits created now will become lifetime habits.

PTA supports participation in this program. For example, PTA provided an jump rope assembly & a jump rope for each child last year for its reading rewards for students.

Parents can support the program by making sure their students wear appropriate shoes each day and gym style shoes on Tuesdays and Fridays. Kindergarten parents can also support the program by providing healthy snacks such as crackers, veggies, pretzels, fruit or gogurts. Parents can encourage children living closer to the school to walk or ride a bike to school. Parents will also be invited to participate in a special "Walk to School Day" in October.

SEP Time!

For parents new to Santa Clara, SEP stands for Student Education Plan. This is a time for your child to meet with you and his/her teacher to assess where they are at and make goals moving forward. The PTA strongly encourages parents to participate in SEP.

A note should have come home today to give the instructions to schedule your SEP appointment. If you did not recieve one, email or send a note to your teacher.

Calling All Golfers!

There is still time to register for the Santa Clara Golf Tournament on Saturday August 20th at Sunbrook Golf Course. Golf with a cart: 4 person team $200, $50 per player, or $25 for juniors playing with a paying adult. Put a team together to play for great prizes. All proceeds will go toward the "Shade Our Children" fund.

Thank you for all who came to Back to School Night. Hopefully you got the information you needed from your teacher(s) and it made you more excited to work with them!

During the PTA General Meeting the budget was approved. This included $6000 going towards our "Shade Our Children" Fund. Our PTA President Laralee Davenport also went through the results of last year's survey regarding PTA events and PTA fundraisers. If you missed the meeting or were left with questions, do not hesitate to ask one of the PTA Board Member. If you don't know a Board Member, ask at the school office & they can give you the name & number to contact.

Our PTA Membership Drive is ongoing. You can simply pay $10 at the office with a check made out to Santa Clara PTA.

Back to School Night for Parents

Back to School Night will be Tuesday, August 16th at 6:30. There will be two sessions to meet teachers. One at 6:30 and one at 7:30. At 7:00 there will be a general meeting in the cafeteria with the principal and will include our one time general PTA meeting. Please plan to attend this night to gather important information.

First Day of School!

Thank you for the wonderful staff who were organized this morning & helping children find classrooms.

Thank you for all the hard prep work you teachers put it to prepare for this day. The organization paid off and the children benefited. It was wonderful!

Are You Ready for School to Start?

If you were not able to attend the Open House feel free to stop by the office this week to pay for school lunch, buy yearbooks, register for choir, buy recorders, and join PTA .

If you know someone who has not registered or is still sitting on the fence deciding where to send their children please encourage them to register this week. The kindergarten classes in particular are hoping for more children to create a 3rd kindergarten class.

Suggested donated supply lists are also available at the office. These supplies are not required but go a long way to support our classrooms & teachers.

Check out who your classmates are by viewing the class lists are posted on the school's front door.

School starts Monday, August 15th at 9 a.m. Kindergarten's regular class begins Tuesday, August 23rd. The countdown is ON!

Open House

Are your kids as excited as mine to find out who their new teacher will be? Come join us tomorrow, August 3rd 2:00 until 5:00. This will allow you to finalize registration, check in with the school nurse, sign up for PTA, pay lunch money, and get teacher assignments!
